The Government's Stewardship: From Private Enterprise to Public Sector Undertaking

In 1980, the Government of Karnataka took over Mysore Sandal Soap, recognizing its cultural significance and economic potential. Under the banner of Karnataka Soaps And Detergents Limited, the soap company flourished, merging with sandalwood oil factories and solidifying its reputation as a purveyor of premium-quality soap crafted from 100% pure sandalwood oil.

The Art of Soapmaking: Tradition Meets Innovation

Karlapuri Shastri's pioneering efforts in soap design revolutionised the industry, giving rise to the iconic oval bar shape that distinguishes Mysore Sandal Soap. Each bar, packaged in an ornate cardboard box adorned with the emblem of Sharabha, embodies the state's rich cultural heritage and symbolizes wisdom and valor.

Sustainable Practices: Cultivating Sandalwood for Future Generations

Despite challenges in sandalwood availability, Karnataka Soaps and Detergents Limited remains committed to sustainable practices, running a Sandalwood Plantation program in collaboration with farmers and the Forest Department. For every tree harvested, a new sapling is planted, ensuring the preservation of this precious resource for future generations.

Exclusive Design

The main reason for this is Karlapuri Shastri, popularly known as 'Soppu Shastri'. He went to England and learned all the techniques of soap making and implemented it here. Shastri was instrumental in designing the oval bar of soap apart from the usual soap patterns.

Just like a piece of jewellery is served in a well-designed, attractive box, Mysore Sandal soap is also sold in a cardboard box with flowers and specific chosen colours. At the center of the soap box is the emblem of Sharabha, an ancient creature with the body of a lion and the head of an elephant. It symbolises the rich heritage of the state. Each soap box also carries the slogan 'Srikantha Thavarininda' printed on it.
