In a recent letter to Doctor Vikatan, N Ravi, a dedicated reader, sought clarification on a common dietary query: "Is it right to eat fruits on an empty stomach? What fruits can you eat?"

Ambika Sekhar

Responding to this inquiry, Ambika Sekar, a prominent nutrition consultant based in Chennai, shared her insights on this often-debated topic. Contrary to some misconceptions, Sekar emphasized the benefits of consuming fruits on an empty stomach. According to her, this practice allows the body to efficiently absorb the energy derived from fruits. Notably, she recommended bananas as a pre-workout snack, highlighting the versatility of this fruit in various forms.

However, Sekar issued a cautionary note regarding citrus fruits. While oranges and sweet lime are nutritionally rich, their consumption on an empty stomach might elevate acidity levels, potentially leading to issues like ulcers. Additionally, she advised against indulging in guava due to its acidity-triggering properties.

Citrus Fruits

For those seeking to pair fruits with other foods, Sekar suggested incorporating fibrous fruits into meals, such as combining oatmeal porridge with fruits. Dieters, she noted, have the flexibility to choose from a variety of fruits, including apples, papayas, watermelons, and more.

Intriguingly, Sekar discouraged the consumption of vegetable salads on an empty stomach due to their high fiber content, which could lead to stomach upset. Instead, she recommended enjoying salads with a small portion of paneer to mitigate potential digestive issues.

Furthermore, Sekar cautioned against drinking coconut water on an empty stomach, as it may contribute to acidity. This underscores the importance of considering not just the nutritional content of foods but also their potential impact on digestive health.
