CHENNAI: Makkal Needhi Maiam (MNM) president and newly sworn-in Rajya Sabha MP Kamal Haasan returned to Chennai on Friday after taking oath in Parliament, reiterating that Tamil Nadu remains his foremost mission and responsibility.
Speaking to reporters at the airport, Haasan said, “We have seen Parliament from outside; now I see it from the inside. I am proud of my duty there.”
When asked about the recent spate of caste-based killings, including the murder of 27-year-old IT employee Kavin Selvaganesh in Tirunelveli, Haasan said such crimes were not new. “Honour killings have existed even before Independence. Their roots lie not just in political parties but in the very structure of our society. Parties may come and go, but society continues,” he said.
On social media platform X, Haasan earlier expressed shock over the killing and urged the Tamil Nadu government to bring the perpetrators to justice with the “strictest punishment under the law.” He wrote, “All political movements must unite against caste-based atrocities. We must recognise caste as our primary enemy and fight until we bring it to an end.”
The demand for a dedicated law has once again gained momentum among political allies and activists, who argue existing legal provisions have failed to deter such crimes.
