Mangaluru: In an extraordinary feat of endurance, discipline, and devotion to classical art, Remona Évet Pereira, a 20-year-old student from St Aloysius College, Mangaluru, has set a world record by performing Bharatanatyam for 170 continuous hours over 7 days.

Trained in Bharatanatyam for over 13 years under her guru Srividya Muralidhar, Remona’s performance earned her a place in the Golden Book of World Records. The record-setting event took place between July 21 and 28, with the dancer permitted a 15-minute break every three hours, as per the guidelines.

From Ganesha songs to powerful Durga Amman renditions, Remona mesmerized the audience with her expressive abhinaya (facial expressions) and precise movements. A devout Christian, Remona performed several pieces starting with Ganapati songs while wearing her rosary, symbolizing spiritual harmony.

The event was graced by Bishop Peter Paul of Mangaluru, lending his blessings and support. Speaking about her achievement, Remona said:

“This 170-hour performance was more than just dance — it was a form of penance. I believe Bharatanatyam can be a symbol of progress and pride for India’s youth.”

A recipient of the prestigious Pradhan Mantri Rashtriya Bal Puraskar in 2022, Remona had already made her mark in the India Book of Records before this world record.

In preparation for the record, the final-year college student trained rigorously for months, practicing for six hours daily, building the stamina and dedication required to perform for 170 hours non-stop — with her anklets (salangai) echoing throughout the journey.

Remona Évet Pereira's story is not just about breaking records, but about breaking barriers — of body, belief, and endurance — through the timeless language of Bharatanatyam.
