All Indian Navy Personnel Detained in Qatar Released, 7 Return Home

English News Desk

In a significant development, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) disclosed that all eight former Indian Navy personnel, who had been detained in Qatar, have now been released, with seven of them having returned to India. This development comes after sustained diplomatic efforts and negotiations between the governments of India and Qatar.

Expressing gratitude for their release, the Indian government extended its thanks to the Amir of Qatar for facilitating the repatriation of the detainees. Initially facing the grave prospect of capital punishment, their sentences were later commuted to extended prison terms following diplomatic appeals and interventions.

The detention of these individuals stemmed from accusations of espionage related to a submarine program, which led to serious charges against them. The MEA strongly condemned the initial imposition of death sentences, pledging to explore all available legal avenues to ensure justice for the accused.

The return of the seven detainees to India serves as a testament to the significance of diplomatic engagement and the protection of citizens abroad. Efforts persist to secure the repatriation of the remaining individual, underscoring the ongoing commitment to safeguarding the rights and interests of Indian nationals detained overseas.

Captain Navtej Singh, Captain Saurabh, Cdr Purnendu Tiwari, Captain Birendra Kumar, Cdr Sugunakar, Cdr Sanjeev, Cdr Amit Nagpal and Navy Constable Rakesh were released.

On arrival in India, they thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi. "We waited for 18 months to return to India. We are very grateful to Prime Minister Narendra Modi for his efforts to free us from a prison in Qatar. This would not have happened had the Prime Minister not intervened personally.”

This case underscores the importance of upholding principles of fairness, due process, and respect for international law in handling such sensitive matters. It also highlights the necessity of cooperation and dialogue between nations to resolve disputes and address challenges related to the detention of foreign nationals.
